I would never deny a girl a piece of cake on her wedding day. I just wish I could say that was the last time I had sugar. Don’t beat yourself up over a little snack now and then. But try not to get addicted.

We hear a lot about the opioid crisis in America, or are subject to laws for smoking and alcohol, but it my opinion, sugar is a major addiction most of us face that rarely gets mentioned.

Speak to most physicians and nutritionists and they'll tell you about diseases many of their patients face due to poor eating choices, with sugar often top on that list.

While I do my best to cut back as much as possible, I'm now reading a lot about various fruits that are just as bad (and diabetics I know are told to stay away from them), such as bananas, mangoes, grapes, cherries, pears and figs, to name a few.

With the summer months upon us and the majority of us eating more fruits at this time of year, I wanted to point out the "good" fruits, those that are better choices to snack on.

Lemons, limes, raspberries,blueberries, strawberries, kiwis, grapefruit, avocado, oranges and peaches are all good choices. But, eat them dried and they are just as bad as those on the "poor" list.

I know we all like to eat watermelon in the summer and I've read for years that it's good for you. Now I'm not so sure, as I've seen some lists where watermelon is mentioned in the "bad for you" category, while others say it's not. So, jury is still out on that one, but at least there's enough on the "good for you" list to keep us satisfied. What I do know for sure is that it's better than a candy bar, lol.

Enjoy them while their ripe!
